PA Breast Cancer Coalition announces statewide Refunds for Research Campaign

The Refunds for Research program funds cutting-edge research projects in Pennsylvania.

EPHRATA, Pa. – This tax season, Pennsylvanians have the opportunity to change lives. The PA Breast CancerCoalition (PBCC) kicks off its 2013 Refunds for Breast Cancer Research campaign this February. The Refunds forResearch program allows each taxpayer to donate his or her state income tax refund to cutting-edge research projects inPennsylvania. Every penny donated goes to grants for Pennsylvania scientists working to find a cure for breast andcervical cancers. By contributing on Line 36 of the PA-40 form, taxpayers will join thousands of individuals who have
chosen to make a difference for women and families in PA.

“The need has never been greater. More than 12,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Pennsylvania thisyear,” said PBCC President and Founder Pat Halpin-Murphy. “Scientists in Pennsylvania are at the forefront of our fightfor a cure, but they desperately need funding from programs like Refunds for Research to develop those ideas intogroundbreaking research. Please consider donating your state income tax refund to the PBCC and bring us closer to acure. ”

In 2013, the PBCC will fund $50,000 grants to the following researchers:

  • Roger Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor  University of Pennsylvania Health System, School of Medicine
  • Hannah Rabinowich, Ph.D., Professor of Pathology & ImmunologyUniversity of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute
  • Ramin Shiekhattar Ph.D., Professor  The Wistar Institute, Gene Expression and Regulation Program

Each taxpayer can make a difference by donating his or her state income tax refund to cutting-edge research projects in PA.

Over the past 15 years, the PBCC has donated nearly $3 million to research projects. Refunds for Research began in1997 when the state legislature enacted the Income Tax Check-off for Breast and Cervical Cancer Research. Since thattime, the program has become one of the most popular refund donations options on the PA-40 Tax Form. All moneydonated to the Refunds for Research initiative directly funds scientists searching for the cause and cure of breast andcervical cancers.
