Twitter Chat: Preventing HPV 7.29.13
Join CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden on Monday, July 29 from 3-4PM ET for a Twitter chat with CDC experts to discuss how we can work with doctors and parents to increase HPV vaccination rates and protect the next generation from cancers caused by HPV.
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Almost every sexually active person will get HPV at some point in their lives.
The good news is there is a safe, effective vaccine available to prevent the kinds of cancer and other diseases caused by HPV.
Last month, CDC reported that vaccine-preventable HPV infections in teen girls have decreased by more than half since we started vaccinating against HPV in 2006. This report, while encouraging, was a wake-up call that we need to ramp up our efforts to increase HPV vaccination rates. Only one third of girls between the ages of 13 and 17—our daughters, sisters, nieces—have received the full HPV vaccination series.
How many wake-up calls do we need? It’s time to increase the number of adolescents and teens vaccinated against HPV. Join this important conversation!
