How to keep that New Year’s resolution in the gym

(Harrisburg) — Time and time again, New Year’s resolutions often center around exercise.

Whether it’s resolving to lose weight, complete a marathon, or get to the gym more, experts say going from small to big is one of the keys to success.

“Jump on your bike and ride your bike for about a half hour. Do little things. It sounds cliche, but walk the stairs instead of taking the elevator. Don’t park right next to the store, park a couple car lengths down and walk to the store that way. Just start with little things and work your way up,” says Matt Gelbaugh, senior athletic trainer at Giesinger Health System.

Gelbaugh says it can also be helpful to get an exercise partner.

He says they can keep motivation up, and on days when it’s easy to skip the gym, provide a reason to show up.
