A planned Hanover dispensary took an important step toward bringing medical marijuana to patients in the Hanover area last week.

Gov. Tom Wolf approved the medical marijuana dispensary in Penn Township for operation, according to a Friday news release.

The state Department of Health awarded Cansortium Pennsylvania LLC, a part of Knox Medical, one of 27 permits to sell medical cannabis products in June 2017. Knox Medical already grows and sells medical marijuana in Florida.

“Each week, we are making great strides in expanding our network where patients with a medical marijuana card can get medical marijuana,” Wolf said in the news release, which also announced the approval of a Montgomery County dispensary and a Franklin Township grower/processor.

The approval means the dispensary, located in the 600 block of Frederick Street at the site of the old Buona Fortuna restaurant, went through several inspections and reviews by the state Department of Health.

“We passed these inspections and received approval to open from the state,” said Scott Klenet, the spokesman for Knox Medical.

The dispensary is on track to open within the next few months, but a date for the grand opening has not been announced, Klenet said.

Knox Medical is committed to hiring and training local candidates to operate the dispensary in Hanover, Klenet said.

The state requires the employment of residents. Several people on the company roster have state ties, including Norman Frey, a Pittsburgh-based doctor of osteopathy who will serve as the company’s medical director, according to the company’s application filed with the Department of Health. Cansortium Pennsylvania LLC is based in King of Prussia.

A jobs fair and open application process for several positions, including customer experience specialists and onsite security personnel, will be announced soon, Klenet said.

“Knox is eager to welcome residents of York County and Pennsylvania through our doors in the near future,” Klenet said. “Friday’s announcement from the governor marks another milestone in our mission to expand Pennsylvanians’ access to the highest-quality cannabis medications.”
