Health law benefits new moms

Pregnancy is an exciting time! You’re busy taking care of yourself and preparing for the arrival of your baby. The last thing you want to do is worry about health insurance and the cost of care.

Under the Affordable Care Act, moms will feel more support in this area.

Let’s start with health insurance. Starting in 2014, it will be illegal for an insurance company to deny coverage based on a pre-existing condition, like pregnancy. And, when women join new insurance plans, they’ll be able to choose any OBGYN in their health plan’s network… without a referral.

And, what about when that baby arrives? Newborns visit the pediatrician often for well-baby visits. Under the Affordable Care Act, these appointments will no longer require a co-pay.

And, what if a mom wants to breastfeed? A breast pump can be expensive. Under the Affordable Care Act, that cost will be covered.

So, while new moms will continue to have a lot to think about, they can focus a little less on things like insurance and costs and more on the most important thing: their baby.
