The film explores the effect of American medicine’s success on the patient/doctor relationship and sheds light on the important role communication plays in helping both patient and doctor navigate the murky waters of severe chronic disease.

American medicine’s success in fighting disease and extending life has created a new reality: the vast majority of patients can now expect to die in a hospital or nursing home in a way that they wouldn’t choose, if they had the choice. Even though birth is as natural as death, it is a taboo topic.

“Consider the Conversation 2: Stories about Cure, Relief, and Comfort” explores the effect of American medicine’s success on the patient/doctor relationship and sheds light on the important role communication plays in helping both patient and doctor navigate the murky waters of severe chronic disease.

The documentary begins with Amanda Redig, M.D., a young internal medicine resident from Boston, sharing the beautiful story of her personal calling to medicine and ends with Robert Fulghum, author of All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten, answering a question about what needs to change in order to move from “what is” to “what could be”.

The film’s website includes a downloadable discussion guide and other resources.

Consider the Conversation 2 will air at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 12 on WITF TV.

The Silent Majority

Seventy percent of teens make good choices about drugs and alcohol, debunking the myth of the teen party culture. “The Silent Majority,” a one-hour documentary, highlights the teens and college students who make good choices with a particular focus on teens impacted by five empowering programs focused on education, prevention and intervention.

Drugs and alcohol rank as the number-one health issue for American teens, killing more young people than all traffic accidents combined. This film focuses on teens who have been addicted and are recovering as well as teens and college students who do not use drugs at all.

The Silent Majority will air at 4:00 p.m. on WITF TV.

These programs are made possible by Transforming Health, a community education partnership of Penn State Hershey Medical Center, WellSpan Health, and WITF.
