Supreme Court health care decision draws praise from advocates
(Harrisburg) — The US Supreme Court’s decision to allow health care subsidies to pass through federally-run exchanges preserves the Affordable Care Act and Pennsylvania supporters say opponents should accept the law isn’t going anywhere.
The US Supreme Court’s decision preserves health care subsidies for about 382,000 Pennsylvanians, says the Wolf administration.
Antoinette Kraus of the Pennsylvania Health Access Network says today is a good day for consumers.
Kraus says with all the uncertainty of the past few years, her group will redouble its efforts.
“So I think we’ll definitely have to get out there and make sure people know that their health care is secure but also educate consumers that don’t know that this program is available for them,” she says.
Kraus says as Medicaid expansion is implemented in Pennsylvania, more opportunities are available to reach those who may not be getting the health care they need.
“This is a very important time to reinforce the concept that your health insurance is secure, your tax credits are here to stay and we know there’s still a lot of folks that need to enroll, so now’s a good time to say, the health care law’s upheld, there’s financial assistance available,” Kraus adds.
After the Court ruling, Governor Tom Wolf says he’s stopping plans to create a state-based health insurance exchange.
In statements, Republicans and others didn’t criticize the decision specifically, instead focusing on the ACA’s impact.
