Healthcare is one of the biggest expenses most families and individuals face today. Even when covered by health insurance, co-pays and deductibles can add up to thousands of dollars coming out of a patient’s pocket.

That’s why a surprise bill after a medical procedure can be so aggravating and potentially costly.

Surprise balance billing is happening fairly often today. It occurs when an in-network hospital or doctor refers a patient to or is assisted by a provider that is out-of-network for the patient’s insurance.

Surprise balance billing has caught the eye of Pennsylvania’s Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller who held a hearing on the matter last week. Secretary Miller appears on Tuesday’s Smart Talk along with WITF’s Transforming Health reporter Ben Allen.
