Students get to know farmers during National Farm to School Month

Only 2 percent of American kids eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables per day, according to the National Farm to School Network.

Local proponents of wellness and buying local have a solution to boost that statistic: More fresh produce in schools. This week, several York County school districts are participating in National Farm to School Month with their own agriculture-themed celebration, Get to Know Your Farmer Week.

In conjunction with York County Buy Fresh Buy Local, Northeastern, South Western, Northern York County and Spring Grove Area school districts, will offer farm-to-school activities — including apple samples, info sessions on sustainable farming, and lunch with a farmer — geared toward exposing students to fruits and vegetables and where their food comes from.

“You would think in a rural area, the kids would know,” said Lisa Smith, community relations coordinator for Spring Grove Area School District. “A lot of the little ones don’t have a clue.”
