Melt calories with fun winter activities

When the first flakes of the season hit the ground, it’s tempting to curl up on the couch and hibernate under mounds of blankets with a cup of hot cocoa.

Although binge-watching a season or two of your favorite TV show might sound amazing, your time would be much better spent melting calories — instead of marshmallows — through all the fun winter activities that are available when it snows. So the time is now.

The calories you’d burn shoveling those sidewalks or coasting down Roundtop Mountain Resort are enough that you could forgo your daily exercise routine. So skip the gym and work out in winter wonderland.

Calories burned in winter activities

The following estimates are based on a 166-pound woman and a 195-pound man, average weights of American adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Each estimate accounts for 60 minutes of activity.

Shoveling snow:
OK, maybe this chore isn’t typically thought of as fun, but who says it’s not? Think of it as an upper-body workout and alternate arms — so you pump up both sides of your body, of course. If you’re driven by competition, time yourself as you shovel out your car. And as long as it keeps snowing, you’ll have an opportunity to complete additional sets.
