Giving, receiving fitness gifts can lead to a healthier new year

My loved ones know it’s always a safe bet to give me a fitness-related gift for birthdays or Christmas. Over the last several years, I’ve become more and more interested in healthy living. And because I’m intrigued by nutrition, exercise and overall wellness, it leaves people with a broad range of options — rather than having to resort to the same old pair of yoga pants year after year (But you can never have enough pairs of yoga pants!)

I’m not exaggerating my excitement for these gifts. For Christmas, my mom gave me a Fitbit Flex, a wireless activity and sleep tracker. I already manually track my calories and physical activity on Lose It!, so this will be a great addition to my healthy-living routine. My mom also gave me a Cooking Light Desk Calendar. I had one for 2013 and looked forward every day to seeing a new recipe.

I needed a new stability ball, so my fiance, Dan, gifted me with a beautiful orange Reebok Stability Ball Kit. It comes with a DVD of two workouts to help me tone my abs in 2014. He also gave me an armband to hold my phone while I hit the gym.

My brother Mike gave me a new pair of headphones, a brand he swears by as the best. He said he has gone through countless pairs of headphones, and he finally found a pair that he loves: Philips ActionFit Sports earhook headphones. I appreciated the advice as much as the gift because for the last couple of weeks, my headphones have been falling out of my ears after a few minutes on the treadmill. They’re also sweat resistant!

Although I’m grateful for everything I’ve received this holiday season, wellness-related gifts excite me most. And they couldn’t come at a better time, after an influx of cookies and decadent treats and at the start of a fresh, new year.

We checked in with our readers on Facebook to learn some of the fitness gifts they received this holiday season. Read what they had to say about their favorites at No Sweat, York.
